Think of this as a part of the exploration and engagement process with a client or client group — one is not ready to engage in work with clients/communities until an understanding/context has been developed. Thus, choose a population with whom you foresee yourself working for your exploration. You should submit a short description of the population you would like to study with a rationale for this exploration to your professor by the beginning of week 7 for approval (online form in Canvas assignments). In your presentation, you will share the following: A description of the marginalized or oppressed group you are focusing on for this project. Provide a rationale for why you have chosen to focus on this population and provide context about who this is — utilize appropriate data sources to provide statistics and relevant information. 2) Context: why is this population marginalized/oppressed — integrate material that demonstrates connectivity to course material. For example, utilize Young's Five Faces of Oppression or Tilly's Categorical Inequalities to explain how this group has been oppressed or relate the experiences of oppression back to the web of institutional racism or web of homophobia, etc. Make deep connections to course materials here. 3)Provide a rationale for why it is important to better understand the experiences of this group as it relates to social work practice. Why is it important to understand the experiences of oppression and marginalization of this group — how will that inform practice that is anti-oppressive and that does not reinforce powerlessness? Link to readings/concepts A discussion of whether or not social work practice with this group seems to be taking into account the history of marginalization and oppression — how does the framework for understanding the population frame "problems" and "solutions"? ,,What does the literature say about the group's culture, history, etc. in terms of best practice?
