ENGL 125: Aboriginal Writing
Long Essay
Length: 1000-1250 words
The purpose of this assignment is to use the skills developed in this course to write a sustained analysis of a course text.
Assignment Description
Write an academic essay according to the standards developed in this course. Your essay must include an original title, an introduction with a thesis statement, multiple body paragraphs that develop a complex analysis, and a conclusion.
Your essay must analyze either Maria Campbell’s Halfbreed or Eden Robinson’s Son of a Trickster.
Your essay must develop an interpretive, argumentative thesis that answers the analytical question posed in your proposal.
Your essay must interpret specific passages from the text, using the 4-step analytical method.
You have the option to write a paper other than a formal academic essay. Such a paper must meet the following conditions:
- Be approved in advance
- Have a well-thought-out reason for using the form. An example of a good reason is an Indigenous scholar using Indigenous analytical methods to analyze an Indigenousauthored text. An example of a poor reason is a student using the analytical form of another discipline because it is their major and they want to play to their strengths.
- The form must develop a clear critical perspective and focus on the text.
This is not a research paper and you are not required to consult outside sources. If you choose to use research in the paper, ensure that it is fully and correctly cited.
Your essay should engage with the concepts and discussions from this course. You should develop your own critical perspective, but the paper must demonstrate your understanding of the course material.
Your essay can develop out of one of your forum posts, but the essay must be entirely new work (you may not repurpose the forum post and use it as a body paragraph). Your classmates’ forum posts and responses to your forum post are their intellectual property and may not be used in your paper (though they can and should inspire the development of your position).
