Guidelines for SCLT 3384 Final

  1. Format of the test:
    1. 4 essay questions: The questions will be selected from the chapter contents of Michael H. Hugos (2011) and lecture discussion materials.
  2. Reading Materials to be utilized:
    1. Textbook: Michael H. Hugos (2011)
    2. Powerpoint slides.
    3. Instructional materials on Blackboard Learn SCLT 3384 course’s learning modules (articles, videos, websites, etc.).
    4. Additional materials to support answers CAN also be used with proper references.
  3. Answers should be well-written and presented with organized structures.  Students can selectively use references to support their statements.  Be succinct; however, students must provide sufficient reasoning when answering questions.
  4. Deadline: midnight, May 4th, 2017. Late submission will not be accepted.
  5. The submission is final.  One and only one submission can be sent to Blackboard Learn.

Chapter 1

  1. Explain the aspects regarding three crucial decisions to make regarding the creation and holding of inventory in a supply chain. Discuss the primary trade-off a supply chain manager needs to consider for inventory management.
  2. Assume that you are a logistics manager for a petrochemical company based in Houston. Discuss the transportation modes you can choose to process inbound and outbound material flows. How are you going to allocate the percentages of materials into different modes? Explain.

Chapter 2

  1. Develop a useful model of supply chain operations that include crucial logistics processes. Explain why the processes need to be considered in your model.
  2. Discuss the characteristics of cycle inventory a company need to manage in a supply chain. If you intend to apply the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) technique to manage cycle inventory, how will you implement it into your inventory control practice?

Chapter 3

  1. What are the supply chain operations that are necessary to make and deliver products and services? Discuss how to make them work.
  2. Michael H. Hugos states, “Supply chain operations can be outsourced”. He also suggests that “The relentless pressure on profit margins that free markets create is a driving force behind the growth of outsourcing.”  Do you think that his statements are applicable to all industries? Please explain.

Chapter 5

  1. Select an industry and its related supply chain. Define a set of metrics for measuring the performance of the supply chain operations of a typical company in the industry.
  2. You are working for a manufacturing company that produces and deliver high-tech products and after-sale services. Discuss ways to collect and display supply chain performance data. How are you going to use performance data to spotlight problems and opportunities?

Chapter 6

  1. What happens to the inventory, production, and transportation operations when a supply chain displays the “Bullwhip Effect” phenomenon?
  2. Provide and evaluate a method that aims at improving coordination and combating the Bullwhip Effect.

  1. Large retailers in United States start to extensively focus on their e-commerce operations. The concept is called “omnichannel”, where customers can buy merchandise anywhere by using their computers or personal communication devices.

There are multiple logistics strategies to support the omnichannel operations. One example is to establish a stand-alone distribution system that solely processes online orders and will not involve orders from conventional channels. Another extreme is to create a centralized information system which consolidates all orders but utilize local retail facilities to process and deliver orders in local facilities’ proximity.

Utilize what you have learned from SCLT 3384 and discuss how logistics technologies (e.g. information & communication technologies) and supply chain processes (transportation, inventory, and distribution networks) need to be planned and managed to support the emerging omnichannel operations.
