1.  Both the Irish and Germans came to the United States in large numbers before and after the American Revolution. Yet, when they arrived, they most often lead vastly different lives in their new homeland. What were these differences and what were the historical factors in their own nations that led the two groups to have such different experiences once they arrived in the United States?

Short Answers: Answers should be structured paragraphs, not random sentences. 250 word minimum.

1. Describe the difference between the Melting Pot theory of immigration and the Mosaic theory of immigration. Give examples drawn from the course material.
2. How is the idea of mass immigration a modern concept? How is it different from the different forms of migration in the past? Is it a quintessentially American idea?
3. The colonies that were founded in the future USA were settled for different reasons depending on whether the colony was in the north or south. What were these reasons and how did they affect the future of the USA?
