During this module, we examined the framework and impact of laws and regulations on the aviation industry. For this activity, you will select one of the legislative acts (other than deregulation) that, in your opinion, was instrumental in shaping the aviation industry. You can select any legislative act, national or international, except for deregulation.

In your blog, explain and support your identified legislative act. Keep in mind that for this activity there are no right or wrong answers. The goal is to engage in a collaborative and constructive debate that promotes critical thought and reflection.

The Federal Aviation Act was signed into law on August 23rd, 1958 (Federal Aviation Act, 2015). This legislative act created the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA is essential to the safe operation of private and commercial aviation. Some of the FAA’s duties include developing new technology, operating air traffic control, and commercial space transportation oversight (Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) - SKYbrary Aviation Safety, 2012). Without the FAA the skies would have no rules and feel like the wild west. Commercial and private aircraft would make up their own rules to include navigation, communications, and maintenance procedures. There would not be any uniformity and safety would undoubtedly suffer. Without air traffic control pilots would be required to avoid traffic on their own taking their attention from flying the aircraft. Pilots can get away with doing this in areas that do not historically have large volumes of air traffic, but near dense population areas air traffic control is required.
