Your task is to question the text using various criteria and to present a reasonable, rational and practical judgement of its strengths and weaknesses. Planning As with all assignments, a successful critical appraisal will require careful and considered planning. We have provided guidelines below to help you with the planning process. Do an initial read-through of the text and note down the main question(s)/answer(s) presented within. Think about the criteria you will evaluate the text against. Some possible evaluation criteria include: Who might find the text useful? What is the value of the text to this demographic? What are the merits of the text (both short and long term)? Does the text try to answer a useful/relevant research question? Does the text provide a new answer/interpretation to an already-established question? What evidence is presented by the author(s) to support their argument? Is that evidence strong/persuasive? Is the text fair and balanced, or biased? What conclusions did the author(s) reach? How final are these conclusions? Read through the text again. Using your evaluation criteria, make detailed notes on the following points: The topic/question The author’s aim/purpose The quality/strength of the methods used, arguments presented and evidence given The conclusion(s) reached. Consider the text in relation to its broader context. Read other texts and literature related to the subject area and think about the merits of the text you are appraising compared to these. Make notes on any similarities/differences you find. Begin drafting your appraisal. Structure We suggest the following structure as a guide: Introduction State the author(s) and title of the text, along with a brief description of its topic/research question. Outline the key argument/main finding of the text. Conclude with a brief statement setting out your overall opinion of the text as a whole (the main argument of your appraisal). Summary The summary should make up no more than one third of your total appraisal. Clearly and concisely set out the important points of the text, including the arguments and evidence presented and conclusion(s) reached. Ensure the summary is comprehensible to those who have not read the original text. NB: the summary is based on the ideas of the author(s), so refrain from presenting your own arguments or judgements at this stage. Your evaluation of the text belongs in the next section. Evaluation/Critique The evaluation will form the main body of your appraisal. This is where you will discuss and critique the strengths and weaknesses of the text using the evaluation criteria you identified during your planning. The word count is tight, so your discussion needs to be succinct and purposeful. Ensure that your evaluation is supported by evidence from the original text and other sources. Keep your evaluation criteria in mind at all times. Refer back to the text throughout the writing process to ensure that you have covered all relevant points. Conclusion Briefly reiterate your overall opinion of the text (using different words) and present recommendations if appropriate. References Include a list of all the sources you have used at the end (using the Harvard referencing system). Format For ease of reading for your tutor, we suggest the following: 12pt font for all text, with the exception of headings Double line spacing Standard size margins Numbered pages, where possible.
