Racism has taken place around the world for many centuries and is a concept that will never be fully eradicated but can be controlled or reduced. Every culture and society has at some point been the victim or perpetrator of racism and discrimination. Living in North America, the idea of racism is completely taboo but unfortunately even in the most developed and diverse places on earth, racism still exists and is not likely to go away anytime soon. Much racism is an extension of threat, an emotion that is instinct to us, as the idea of equality fringes upon one’s expectation of privilege and power for being a native of their own country. Discrimination is natural amongst human beings but unfortunately fuels racist thoughts, so if discrimination exists technically racism will too and stereotypes which were created to classify behaviours of certain races exists and as long people from that culture fall victim and become a stereotype themselves, racist thoughts will exist. Although we’ve come a long way, discrimination is almost built into our brains especially since it’s a concept we’ve been taught from a young age and can be mediated but will never completely be eliminated.

Ban Ki-moon, a South Korean diplomat, once said, “Defeating racism, tribalism, intolerance and all forms of discrimination will liberate us all, victim and perpetrator alike.” This quote from Ban Ki-moon’s 2011 speech suggests that the people of earth must be liberated from racism, but what caused us to be “enslaved” in the first place? What has caused racism to prevail long enough to infect and poison our community? Racism has been prevalent because of fear, social and economic status, and the high self-esteem within individuals.
Humans naturally seek to protect their own kind, which means they fear any threat that could compromise the safety of the people in their own racial community.

People are often criticized by where their residency is, their race, their income, what type of car they drive and so on; these things are also taken into consideration when a community is placing someone into a societal class in their minds. According to CNN, in 2015 the percentage of Americans living under the poverty level was 13.5%. In this same year, the percentage of African Americans living under the poverty level was 24.7 %, almost twice the national level. Since there are more African Americans in poverty stricken places, there is a greater feeling of superiority amongst some people over the African Americans. These statistics also may cause people to generalize all African Americans as “poor” since the number is so high. This is because they are automatically placed into a lower class in other’s minds, giving upper-class people the habit of treating all African Americans like they are inferior. Liberty1995, an author from CNN, also reveals, “In a study done at the University of Michigan it was found that all minorities are viewed negatively by whites in terms of potential for violence.”

Racism is one of the world’s major issues as of today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our work, schools or anywhere else where our social lives are happening. It is obvious that racism is bad as it was many decades ago, but it sure has not stayed away from all of us. Racism still exists and it is about time that people need to start thinking about ways to get a solution to this matter. There could be a debate that people were brought into the world as a racist or not. However it is not the case at all. In fact, no one can be born a racist. People learn by becoming one as they grow from child to adulthood. Mainstream, institutions, or government, and even some hidden events in Canada’s past are a few of the possible instigations and solutions to racism.

Frustration is a very common cause of racism. If one is having this type of social issue, they tend to get very angry with people and the problem is that some may not be even concerned with their situation. For example, when a person is having a tough time in terms of the economic, people find a way and blame immigrants for taking away their jobs or creating fewer opportunities. This type of an analysis is very easy to make but when one makes this assumption, it usually leads to hate towards any minority group.

There are three causes why racism is still going today. Those three causes are unfamiliarity, stereotypes, and selfishness. These causes are the reason why one race of people believe they are superior to another.

The Psychological Effects Of Racism:

Death, hate, violence, abuse, and discrimination are all by products of racism. Not only does it leave a path of destruction it is also uncomfortably common. Racism is defined by prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. Such beliefs are inevitable due to human nature, the issue is the sheer magnitude of racism. Such beliefs are held across the world and it leads to civil unrest and even interpersonal conflicts. The primary effect racism has on individuals is the ability to manipulate them on a psychological level and even physiological level in extreme cases. The psychological effects of racism are often overlooked, which is unsettling because of the amount chaos it causes on the psychological level. Such chaos must be examined and studied in order to find the impact racism leaves on an individual. Impacts are often depression, anxiety, stress, neural processes, neurochemical changes, cognitive structures, and substance abuse. The list may not seem long but keep in mind that each subject listed yields it's own issues. The psychological effects of racism are vast and dismal, yet no one seems to really be informed.
