Chemistry Jan 18, 2021

Which of the following would occur if solid NH4Cl was added to an aqueous solution of NH3? The pH decreases. The equilibrium constant changes. The pH increases. NH3 will ionize to a greater extent.

Expert Solution

Ans. As in aqueous solution of NH3 , reaction occurs as ,

NH3 + H2O <-----> NH4+ + OH-

So , when solid NH4Cl added to an aqueous solution of NH3 , then , concentration of NH4+ increases . That is , conc. of product increases . So , according to Le Chatelier's principle , reaction has to shift towards left side so as to increase the conc. of reactants and attain equilibrium. Due to this , conc. of OH- decreases as the reaction shifts to left side to attain equilibrium . Therefore , as the conc. of OH- decreases , pH also decreases   .
