I was with my friends after our school vacation. One of my friend described how they were preparing an egg at home and how the whole family enjoyed it. Someone from the group suddenly reacted to her saying she is exaggerating because we couldn't understand how two eggs could be shared among a family of eight. Somewhere the focus of that conversation changed as another friend, who was partially listening came up with her vacation story.

It took me years to realise what had gone wrong with me on that day. I was not aware of the differences that the socio economic situation could have on individual's experiences. We could have listened to our friend who was so excited to talk about her life. Perhaps, an egg might have been a luxury for them. Now I realise why that friend slowly moved out of our group and became silent afterwards.
