My first personal computer was a TRS-80 from Radio Shack. We can conclude from my experience that there was competition in the personal computer industry that is not around anymore. Other competitors included Compac, Commodore, and IBM.

However, it is not correct to say that Apple and Microsoft have a monopoly today. By definition, since there are two firms competing with each other, it would be an oligopoly rather than a monopoly.
