Homework Assignment #5 – Needs Analysis & Functional Analysis

Assignment:   A Robot System to Detect IEDs

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) have been and continue to be a serious threat to military forces and to civilian populations.  You are a lead systems engineer with Advanced Robotics, Inc.  DoD has asked your company to develop a remotely-controlled portable robot system to support area clearance of IEDs in both urban and remote (rugged) environments.  This system is responsible for the identification of IEDs.  The neutralization or destruction of the IEDs will be handled by other systems or operators.  Be creative and communicate with your other systems engineers at your company (classmates) to share ideas and ask questions.

Here is your assignment as the Lead Systems Engineer:

  1. Make a stakeholder “wishlist” of capabilities and characteristics of the system that they would desire.
  2. Define the top level functions of the system and decompose the functions to two lower levels of detail
  3. Define the major physical components (or subsystems) of the system and allocate the functions to these components.
