Observational astrophysics deals with gathering empirical data from telescopes, space probes and other types of equipment in order to carry out research. This is opposed to theoretical astrophysics which is far less dependent on empirical research. Most astrophysicists carry out both observational and theoretical work. There really is not a sharp distinction between the two branches.
