What was the hierarchy of the feudal system?

Peasants, or serfs, were at the bottom of the feudal hierarchy. These people had the fewest rights. The peasants were required to farm their land and pay rent. The knights were the next step up. They were required to protect and feed the peasants while also paying homage and offering military service to the lords, who were higher on the feudal hierarchy. The lords would offer loyalty and military aid to the king while feeding, sheltering, and protecting the knights. The lords were comprised of the nobles and those who held titles like Duke, Earl, Count, Viscount, Barons and even religious figures like Bishop and Abbot. The king maintained the most power and highest social status.

Each person in the hierarchy had a specific role, and the adherence thereof was necessary to ensure the society functioned effectively.
