Vladimir Lenin was an atheist, though he had been baptized into the Russian Orthodox Church as an infant. Lenin believed religion to be one of the main sources of human misery and oppression. During his time as leader of the Soviet Union, the conversion of the Soviet population to atheism was one of his main goals. Eradicating organized religion remained one of the main goals of the USSR throughout its history.
