Instructions: 

 

1. Review the PowerPoint presentation Understanding Your Personal Context.pptx

 to recall the eight dimensions of one's personal context. You may also want to review your earlier work on identifying and ranking your personal context dimensions. 

 

2. Read/review the articles on violence in media from Chapter 2:

"Violent Media Is Good for Kids" by Gerard Jones, pages 64-67

"When Life Imitates Video" by John Leo, pages 68-70

"Don't Withhold Violent Games" by Jessica Robbins, pages 74-75

"Violence in Mass Media" by American Psychological Association, pages 75-77

3. In the first paragraph of your discussion post explain which textbook article on violence in media represents your position and which elements of your own personal context have influenced your choice. In other words, identify the important dimensions in forming your own opinion on whether or not violent media are harmful.

4. In the second paragraph decide which textbook article represents the position opposite of yours.

• Review the PowerPoint presentation this time paying close attention to the descriptions of "imaginary friends" (Marla, Juan, and so on).
• Infer which of the five "friends"  would find this article most convincing, that is which of the five "friends" could be your likely opponent.
• Explain how you came up with your inference – which details in the personal context of the "friend" seemed most important and why.

There are no wrong answers; the purpose of the assignment is to show that you understand how personal context might influence opinions.  

 

Due: Wednesday, Week 1

Where do I post my work? After you compose your two paragraphs in Word and save them to your computer, copy your work, go to the Discussions Tab on the menu and paste your response in the 1.5 Discussions topic thread. Use editing tools to make sure paragraph format is preserved.
