The 1918 revelation of Joseph F. Smith provides contributions to what happens in the spirit world. He indicates that once an Apostle, Seventy or Elder, dies in faith, he has an opportunity to enter the work of ministry in the spirit world. There are many souls who need redemption as they died without truth about the knowing the gospel. Another truth about the spirit world is that half of the people who pass away are women. While men cannot spread the gospel to the women, other women who have been ordained by the authority of the Holy Priesthood will be responsible for ministering to the women. Third, individuals who did not have an opportunity to learn God’s word as mortals but learn about in in the spirit life and accept the gospel will have a chance to redeem themselves. On the other hand, people who had the opportunity to receive God’s word as mortals but did not accept it will not have the opportunity to redeem themselves.

Your Answer:

It is important to understand why Jesus Christ visited the spirit world in the days prior to his salvation as it shows that everyone is given an equal chance of knowing the gospel. Some of the people Jesus Christ came into contact with had been in the spirit world for thousands of years, since the time of Adam up to the death of the Savior. The people in the spirit world had not had an opportunity to know about God’s word. Jesus’ descent into the spirit world is also effective on answering the question of what happens to people who die without having an opportunity of knowing the gospel. Geographical and religious barriers may prevent people from learning about the gospel. On the other hand, Jesus answered Nicodemus that a person has to be born again for them to enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, an ordained Apostle, Seventy, or Elder is tasked with spreading the gospel to people in the spirit world so that they can have the opportunity to become born again.
