As you have learned from this week’s readings, a cause-effect chain argues that one thing leads to another (e.g., “Increasing levels of acidity in sea water are harming the oceans’ coral reefs.”). A causal cause and effect chain links causal claims together as links in a chain. Remember your argument is only as strong as the weakest link in your chain.

Summarize the causal cause and effect chain used by the writer in the article from The New York Times. Was the argument persuasive? Why or why not?

  • What has caused the growth of the illegal sale of human organs in some countries, a concept unthinkable 100 years ago?
  • What has caused the growth of selling human organs on the black market?
  • What are the causes you have identified and will write about in your draft?
  • What are the effects you have identified and will write about in your draft?

After reading the article provided, it was clear that the reason the growth of the illegal sale of human organs in some countries can be blamed on the fact that the economy in those countries is causing them to lose their jobs thus causing them to take drastic measures just to put food on the table. The black market offers money to people for their organs making it more appealing to some who are in dire need of funds to turn to someone who can offer them thousands of dollars for an organ that they don't necessarily need. The argument in this article is, "if it's my body, I should be able to do what I want with it". Which is a valid point in my opinion. Why should anyone care what I do with my body? But at the same time, am I willing to risk possible side effects to a not needed surgery? The fact that one of the gentleman in the article has had his organ on the internet for over 6 months with a few bites tells me that this may not be the way to go in order to make some fast cash. People went through extreme measures to obtain what they wanted. Take for example the story about the man who "gave" his kidney to a politician and in return, he was put on the company payroll and was offered the medications he needed. The man thought he'd be on the politician's payroll forever but was cut off and since his family had gone through the money so quickly is now forced to sell eggs at a local market.
