Psychology

The example that I am going to be using is the movie "The Smurfs" movie made in 2011, throughout the entire movie there is only one portrayal of the female character (i.e name Smurfette) her whole character is shown as a girl but not in a strong way, she is shown as weak and not having a real life goal or even purpose she is shown in the light of just being a girly girl and in other words "a dumb blonde" not really having a mind of her own or even thinking. Smurfette being the only girl in the Smurf village she is treated like she just takes up space, basically like she has no goals. I think when little kids see movies like this especially little girls they will see her character and think that she is just a pretty face and doesn't really have anything going for herself and is useless which in our society little girls who grow up should grow up to be strong independent women who have careers and can reach the same levels men. I feel when movies that are like this one and they come out it almost puts a damper on what a little girl feels about who she will grow up to be and be treated society, which shouldn't be the case because then little grow up thinking that being a pretty face is all they have to offer when that's not reality. When these girls/boys are growing into adulthood especially for girls seeing films and tv and other things it's going to change how not only little girls see themselves but also boys because that then translates into boys treating girls who look a certain like their dumb or not on the same level as them. In our society for both boys and girls we need to be informing them that no matter your gender and the way you look you can achieve anything or goal that you want and that's important.I feel that children from a young age when they see things that you should be told about them and not explaining it in a gender role type of way but in a sense that it doesn't matter your gender or the way you look you can get to whatever level in life that you want ( i.e job, life, goals) you can be and do anything you want. It's important to teach them because if no one does then you grow up thinking that what they saw in a movie or tv show is true, when in reality it's not.To remember that no matter your gender you can achieve anything that you want to do or be, that it shouldn't matter your gender or the way that you look. You can climb the ladder of success boy or girl. That we need to inform children about gender roles and how it doesn't or rather shouldn't matter boy/girl you can do whatever you want to do it shouldn't matter your looks.
