The trait concept represents people’s broad dispositions to display a certain type of behavior or to have certain types of emotional experiences. Allport, one of the fi rst trait theorists, differentiated among cardinal traits, central traits, and specifi c dispositions. He also suggested that some traits could only be identifi ed through idiographic research strategies, that is, research strategies that are sensitive to potentially idiosyncratic qualities of particular individuals.
