In order for the government to provide services, there has to exist a source of revenue. Taxes are collected to fund the various programs and services carried out by each level of government. Per the Chapter 11 video, Texas is ranked as the 5th most regressive tax state. What does this mean? Texas takes a much greater share of income from low- and middle-income families than from wealthy families. Texas’ reputation as a low-tax state works for those who have the highest incomes, but what about the rest of us?

For this discussion, there are two resources that you need to review - the Chapter 11 video and the webpage “Who Pays? 6th Edition” from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP).

1. There is a lot of information in the “Who Pays” page. Choose one statistic or tidbit of information that strikes you as interesting and share it with the group. Explain why you think the information you shared is important.
2. Based on the ideas presented in the Chapter 11 video, what possible solution to our revenue problems do you think would help all Texans? Explain your answer
