Julia wishes to rent business premises in Westlake Shopping Centre from which to run her cookware business

Law Nov 06, 2020

Julia wishes to rent business premises in Westlake Shopping Centre from which to run her cookware business. Norman, the owner of Westlake Shopping Centre, informs Julia that she should rent the vacant space opposite the busy supermarket chain, Food Savers, since she would be assured of a large number of customers walking past. Julia is looking to attract upmarket customers for her range of cookware and, on discovering that the premises Norman suggested also happen to be next door to an exclusive fashion shop, she decides to rent the premises from Norman. Norman also tells Julia that he will be launching a nationwide advertising campaign to ensure that Westlake Shopping Centre is a success. Later that week, Norman discovers that Food Savers has gone into receivership and is closing all of its stores. The next day, Norman realises that he does not have enough money to launch his advertising campaign. Several months later, Julia's cookware business is in serious financial trouble. Shoppers have not heard of Westlake Shopping Centre and it is rarely visited. And, since the closure of Food Savers, the situation has become even worse. Julia's bank now demands that she repay her loan and she is forced to sell her family house.
