Compare Native Americans with the Chinese-American experience of citizenship over time. How are they similar and how are they different? Native Americans are also known as American Indians who were the original inhabitants of United States that came from Asia some 15,000 years ago.
Chinese Americans were descendants of Chinese or the Chinese people born in America. These were the people who migrated for work or some other reasons.
INCORPORATION
Native Americans and the Chinese American represents the smallest ethnoracial groups in United States. Chinese Americans were incorporated in the United States legislation by immigration whereas Native Americans were incorporated by territorial conquest. Native Americans were not immigrants but the original inhabitants.
PROGRESS
Over the period of the decades the Chinese immigrants could only get struggle ,isolation , slow progress so that they could find a secure place in the life of the nation. There difficulties even grew after the Chinese exclusion act of 1882 that restricted the Chinese citizenship. Later, the 1924 Immigration Act did even further that extended restrictions to immigrants from other Asian countries also until this restrictions were relaxed in the middle of 20th century.
STRUGGLE FOR WORK
Chinese immigrants realized that the situation was very difficult. They were basically employed for the low category work that is making the railroads in sewing industry , laundry business, growing mining towns. Their work was brutally difficult with a very low wage pay, that included injuries to the workers and to death rate was high.Since language problem and racial discrimination was a hurdle for establishing trade still Chinese Americans flourished with that opportunity and launched new businesses like shop, restaurants, laundries and even developing farm land of western America and that included plantations of Hawaii in vineyards of California.
DIFFERENCE IN LAW PRACTICES
While Chinese Americans faced racial discrimination at work they were also harassed by punitive rules and regulation. The Queue Ordinance of 1873 outlaw Chinese Americans the wearing of long braids by men , a Chinese custom. Chinese Americans were not allowed to work for federal, state and local government. They were also prohibited for educating the children in public school. They were also prohibited for testifying in court against European Americans .
A NEW COMMUNITY
Since any child born in America becomes a US citizen so many Chinese immigrants bought properties in children's name and started businesses, investing in other businesses and taking opportunities that were not available to them earlier . When Exclusion Act was removed away in 1943 , Chinese Americans were finally eligible for citizenship. After many decades the Chinese culture grew and they were able to establish the community in United States.
SUMMARY
With the growth in decades both Native Americans and the Chinese Americans have built a special place in United States .They have flourished in many parts of industry and also got legislative rights.
