English language learners (ELLs) constitute one of the fastest growing subpopulations of students in the United States. Yet they are assessed the exact same way as native English speakers. Many educators believe that standardized tests are unfair to ELL's. One reason is that they are often unreliable because if ELLs do not speak English, they will not be able to answer questions but that does not mean that they do not know the content. There is a difference between content knowledge and language proficiency. What are some other ways that teachers can assess students in a classroom so that students can demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of ways?
