my opinion, the theme for this story is the impact of tradition.

1) Why does Jackson use stoning as the method for sacrifice?

Jackson uses stoning as a method of sacrifice because that was the method of sacrifice used since this ritual first started and the people of Jackson wanted to still uphold that tradition no matter how brutal it is.

2) What is the purpose of the lottery? Do the townspeople know?

The purpose of the lottery is to choose a single person to offer as sacrifice and stone to death. The people of Jackson are very much aware of the aim for the lottery.

3.How are family bonds portrayed? When do they break down? Who is Tessie trying to get included in their family drawing so her own chance of ‘winning’ is less?

family bonds are very shaky as portrayed in the story. They break down especially during the lottery period because they try to turn against each other so they don't win the lottery. Tessie was trying to include Eva and Dave in their family drawing so her chances of her winning would be less but because Eva was married, she was no longer part of the Hutchinson's family.
