1. On the news, the narrator hears that an "underground espionage ring...has been smuggling precious national resources over the border into Canada" (94). What do you think these resources are? Explain your reasoning.

 

1. The chapter ends with the narrator remembering the last time her family was together. What was their plan? What feelings do you think this memory evokes for her? Use quotes to explain your reasoning.

 

 

CHAPTER FIFTEEN (answer both)

 

1. How does the narrator feel about the Commander? Use quotes to support your response.

 

1. The narrator remembers something that happened to Moira at the Red Centre. Explain: what did Moira do (or attempt)? How was she punished? How far do you think the authorities are willing to go to make sure the handmaids are obedient?

The "Ceremony" certainly involves rape, but the narrator doesn't feel that this is an accurate description of what is happening: "nothing is going on here that I haven't signed up for...this is what I chose" (107). Is she being fair to herself here? What were her choices? Could she simply choose not to participate? Explain your response.
