  1. Briefly discuss the purpose and role that each type of financial institutions (depositary, contractual, and investment) play in the U.S. economy. How do each of these institutions intersect with the various types of markets, i.e., capital, money, spot (cash), derivatives, Forex and Interbank, primary, and secondary (inclusive of OTC)?

  2. Select a publicly traded firm of your choice that enjoys a large shareholder base. What challenges may this firm have encountered (or is likely to encounter) in terms of (a) incorporating ethics into financial management practices, and (b) maintaining/sustaining ethical practices in the face of internal or external (market) pressures? Frame your response relative to the financial manager's fiduciary duty to maximize shareholder's wealth.

  1. The depository types of financial institutions include banks, credit unions, saving and loan associations and mutual saving banks. A depository financial institution is one that spends significant time in vault loaning, and the administrations offered by these foundations are somewhat not quite the same as that of other money related specialist organizations. The depository financial institution are otherwise called deposit-taking financial organizations, (Eiff, 2020). Contractual savings institutions include national provident funds, life insurance companies, private pension funds, and funded social pension insurance systems. They have long-term liabilities and stable cash flows and are therefore ideal providers of term finance, not only to government and industry, but also to municipal authorities and the housing sector. Contractual savings institutions play a much bigger role in the financial systems of developed countries, (Dimitri & Michael, 1991).

Investment banks specialize in providing services designed to facilitate business operations, such as capital expenditure financing and equity offerings, including initial public offerings (IPOs). They also commonly offer brokerage services for investors, act as market makers for trading exchanges, and manage mergers, acquisitions, and other corporate restructurings, (Hayes, 2019). In the United States and in other market economies, monetary firms and markets channel reserve funds into capital ventures. Money related markets, and the economy all in all, work much better when the estimation of the dollar is steady, encountering neither quick expansion nor collapse. In the United States, the Federal Reserve System works as the focal financial organization. It has the essential duty to keep the perfect measure of cash coursing in the economy.

Among the three significant areas of the U.S. economy—families, organizations, and government—just family units are net savers. At the end of the day, families set aside more cash than they acquire. On the other hand, organizations and government are net borrowers. A couple of organizations may spare more than they put resources into undertakings. Be that as it may, by and large, organizations in the United States, similar to organizations in for all intents and purposes all nations, contribute definitely more than they spare. Numerous organizations acquire assets to back their speculations. And keeping in mind that some neighborhood and state governments once in a while run spending plan surpluses, in general the administration division is additionally an enormous net borrower in the U.S. economy. The administration acquires cash by giving different types of bonds. Like corporate securities, government securities are legally binding commitments to reimburse what is acquired, in addition to some predefined pace of enthusiasm, at a predetermined time, (Horton, 2019).

  2. One of my favorite large publicly traded firms is Caterpillar Inc. There are so many reasons to love this company, as they have such a rich history, and are an American company that has worked hard to keep their manufacturing from being outsourced. Started in 1910 as Holt they began by building steam tractors, used in mining and earth moving. During World War 1 Holt steam tractors were implemented on the battlefields to transport tanks and other vehicles. After the war the company needed to quickly shift its manufacturing as their large contracts with the military had ended. Caterpillar was officially formed in 1925 and began producing vehicles to meet the needs of the road building act of 1921. Today Caterpillar has expanded operations internationally and is now one of the larges US Fortune 100 companies dealing in revenues of 52 billion dollars in 2019. The reason they have earned this success, is due to their reputation for providing quality products that outlast their competitors.

In recent years however CAT has failed to grow their revenue as aggressively and therefore has been forced to take measures to mitigate losses. Between 2014 and 2016 they experienced a decrease in revenues of 51%. In 2012 the company announced that there were going to be benefit and a wage freeze. Nearly 857 employees went on strike to dispute these changes, in spite of these hard times the CEO was being given a 60% salary increase. Manufacturing shutdowns, and layoffs are a natural part of corporations, however ethical concerns arise when the leaders of organizations give themselves bonuses while their lower level employees suffer. Currently even throughout the Corona virus, construction has continued to continue, and their revenues have maintained. The only issues that could occur within CAT would be embezzlement, or fraud. However, only time will tell or maybe the 2 reports.
