Enzymes are proteins that catalyze physiological reactions by holding the substrates in optimal positions for the necessary reaction to occur. They typically follow first order kinetics. If you think back to biology, the glycolysis cycle has 10 steps, with an enzyme at each step. What is the benefit to having enzymes in this pathway? Why is it an advantage to the organism to have these proteins involved in almost every reaction that takes place in your body?
