Write about a folk group of which you are or have been a member. Focus on who’s in the group, how one becomes a member, group hierarchy, why members are members, and so forth. What characteristics do the members of each group share? How did the group form? Is it a group based on shared interest? Proximity? Occupation? What special traditions, customs, or verbal expressions do the group members share that let them and others know they are members of the group? Give examples of how esoteric and exoteric folklore differ in groups that you are familiar with.

After posting your discussion and reading the posts of your classmates, comment on two of your classmates’ posts. Do you have questions for them? Are you familiar with groups like this? After seeing the posts of your classmates, did you think of other groups that you belong to?

Guidelines for Discussion Boards

• For the purposes of this class, a week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday evening.
• Complete your weekly reading and watching lectures and films by Friday evening.
• Post your initial input to the discussion board by Saturday at noon and respond to two of your classmates by Sunday evening. 
• Before you post to the next week's discussion board, read over the comments that were made the previous week and answer any questions that your classmates asked about your post.
