Write about a folk group of which you are or have been a member

Management Oct 09, 2020

Write about a folk group of which you are or have been a member. Focus on who’s in the group, how one becomes a member, group hierarchy, why members are members, and so forth. What characteristics do the members of each group share? How did the group form? Is it a group based on shared interest? Proximity? Occupation? What special traditions, customs, or verbal expressions do the group members share that let them and others know they are members of the group? Give examples of how esoteric and exoteric folklore differ in groups that you are familiar with.

After posting your discussion and reading the posts of your classmates, comment on two of your classmates’ posts. Do you have questions for them? Are you familiar with groups like this? After seeing the posts of your classmates, did you think of other groups that you belong to?

When I was younger, I belonged to the Boy Scouts of America.  Within the organization are a number of subgroups and sub organizations such as Order of the Arrow.  I belonged to all of these groups to include reaching the rank of Eagle Scout.  One becomes a member of this organization by simply joining a troop (a local group).  There are ranks and initiation rituals surrounding almost every event within the Boy scouts.  The group has a strict hierarchy.  At the top, you have the Scoutmaster (adult), and assistant scoutmaster (adults).  At times parents can offer to volunteer as either subject matter experts and teach a merit badge, or as a general volunteer.  Below these adults are the youth ranks.  There tends to be the organized ranks of advancement and then the unorganized ranks created by peer pressure and popularity.

The members of any Troop can change depending on the local regional flare of the Troop.  Within my troop there was the general connection of being interested in outdoor activities such as camping, archery, and hiking/fishing.  Some groups are more focused on religion, or city community involvement.  The group was formed before I joined it but the general history around the Boy Scouts of America came from the creation of the boy scouts post world war 2 in Britain.  There is a shared interest in community, fraternity, and integrity that surround everything the Boy Scouts do.  The group had a special motto, handshake, and oath that would be expressed at every weekly meeting.

Almost everyone in the United States know who the boy scouts are and what they can or have done for a community.  You see them at community gatherings such as carnivals or parades.  Most people see them as a positive influence on the community even surrounding the negative internal discussions over sexual violence and lack of diversity.  Exoterically, the group tries to help out its local community and bring joy, peace and aid to those in need.  Esoterically the group can be very insular with it’s own internal politics particularly when it surround the high rank of Eagle scout and Order of the Arrow.

This difference within the Esoterica and Exoteric nature of the group is similar to what one may find within more secretive organization such as the Masons or Knights of Columbus.
