    • Which dimension of food security was missing (availability, access, utilization, or stability/vulnerability)?
    • What is the underlying cause of the food insecurity?
    • What has to change in this situation to ensure food security for the example you selected?

Guidelines

A complete and meaningful response to the discussion prompt will earn the required points. You may instead choose to respond to another student's original response to the prompt, which will also count as points if it is complete and meaningful, for example, raises additional support for an argument, respectfully challenges a position, or raises meaningful questions.

In each Discussion forum, if you both respond to the original prompt and engage in a dialog with a classmate in an exchange of more than 2 posts (your original post or a classmate's), you can earn an additional one point in that forum, gaining an additional point on the Discussion.

*Dimension of food security missing:

1) Availability

  • Philippine is a country full of fertile lands which results in the country to highly depend on agriculture for the economy. Unfortunately, as this is situated in the middle of Pacific, the country is susceptible to natural calamities such as typhoons and droughts which truly affect the agricultural supply in the country. For example, El Nino phenomenon last 2016 destroyed 349,360 metric tons of crops amounting to $95 million.
  • The lack of accessible roads that link farms to retailers or also known as farm-to-market roads (FMRs) also affect the supply in the market. This results for the farmers/ fishermen not to transport their goods, instead of traversing the unfriendly way going to the market, the farmers/ fisherman's not bring their products instead it just goes to waste.

2) Access

  • This is one of the biggest challenges in the Philippines, lack of income/ inadequate income due to unemployment/ not having a regular job. Based on a survey conducted by Laylo Research Strategies among 1,600 households in 16 poorest provinces, leading results are that 37% of families have an inadequate income), and 18% of household heads do not have regular jobs (Gavilan, 2015).

3) Utilization

  • Income is the challenge again for this dimension, given the high price of food in the country, only those with sufficient income can afford to have nutritious food.

4) Stability

  • Income is a factor again for this dimension, given there is no money to buy nutritious food, as an effect malnutrition will be present as well as no constant supply of food for the family.

*Underlying cause of food insecurity:

  • Lack of income/ inadequate income due to unemployment/ not having a regular job
  • Lack of FMRs
  • High price of goods

*Need to change in the situation to ensure food security:

  • The Government needs to create additional jobs/ programs for lower class Filipinos to have a source of income. Assistance programs to the farmers and fisherman's especially when there are natural calamities would also be greatly beneficial. Construction of additional FMRs to assist the farmers/ fishermen on the transportation of goods so that the public markets will have a consistent supply of food. As a result also, prices of goods will not be really high given the availability of supply.
