We have talked about plant and animal food production separately, but they are clearly linked in many ways
- We have talked about plant and animal food production separately, but they are clearly linked in many ways. Consider what you learned about the plant and animal production systems so far in Food Systems:
- What are the most important linkages or “interfaces” between plant and animal food production?
- Which of our class themes did you hear come out (environmental, human health, scale, social, economic, waste) at the interface between plant and animal production systems? Give 1-2 examples.
- What are the constraints facing plant and/or animal production systems in the future (physical, human values, or legal/economic)?
- What questions do you still have regarding plant and animal production?
I expect you to refer to some class material to justify your responses. These reflections should be longer and more complete than typical discussion posts. Be sure to address each bullet point for full points.
Guidelines
A complete and meaningful response to the discussion prompt will earn the required points.
You may respond to another student's original response to the prompt to earn one extra point, for example, raising additional support for an argument, respectfully challenges a position, or raises meaningful questions in an exchange of 2 or more posts. If you do so, you can earn 5/4 points in this discussion.

- What are the most important linkages or “interfaces” between plant and animal food production?

- The most important linkages between plant and animal food production is responsible farming (both animal and plant). Animal feed consists of mostly plant based products. If that product is made at a lower quality it will have less nutrients therefore impacting the health of the animal that eats it. Additionally, if that product is made with fertilizers, pesticides, and other farm assisting chemicals then that also impacts the health of the animal eating it.

- An environmental theme was common in this week‘s material. The videos on Oregon Fisheries explained how salmon is greatly impacted by the California currents. Some years it’s very good for the Salmon and other years it’s more beneficial for other species such as Western Sardines.
- Social themes were also common. The example of the changes the Country Natural Beef corporation made support this. The company is “consumer centric” and their ranchers feel obligated to own the “birth to plate” process. They produced smaller, leaner, healthier cows that have the individual record attached to its ear as proof.

- What are the constraints facing plant and/or animal production systems in the future (physical, human values, or legal/economic)?

- One form of human constraint that I think gets overlooked is self-imposed restrictions. This is a good thing, however the restrictions we put in place can impact our food supply. The video that describes the Pacific Whiting fishery explains that only 11% of the biomass can be harvested each year. That 11% can vary from a small amount to a large amount, but regardless it is limited. Restrictions like these are common in the fishing industry and its purpose is to enable sustainability.

- What questions do you still have regarding plant and animal production?
-
-
- Has the quality of fish (e.g. size and nutrient levels) been negatively impacted by pollution and overfishing?
- How can socially responsible animal food production be made more affordable so more countries can enable these practices?
