For this week's discussionwe will take time to compare the ancient literature of India and China with contemporary media. Students will compare the themes and values presented in The Mahabharatato a modern example of media, either film or a television series. Additionally, students will compare the lessons of The Tao Te Chingwith modern philosophical media (advice books, inspirational Instagrams, tik tocs etc).

Instructions

After reading Chapter 5 (specifically the excerpts from The Mahabharata), and excerpts from the PDF copy of The Tao Te Chingstudents will compare these works of ancient literature with modern media. Students choose the media to compare to each work of literature; the only requirement is that the media they choose for comparison is modern i.e. created in our lifetime.

Address these prompts/questions:

For The Mahabharata:Compare the basic themes of The Mahabharata with the example you chose. Are there similar characters? If so, how are they similar? Are the story lines the same? What values are presented in each work?

For The Tao Te Ching: Compare the basic ideals or life philosophies of The Tao Te Ching with the example you chose. Are there similarities between the advice given in each work? If so, how are they similar? Are the life philosophies the same? What type of lifestyle is valued in each work?

Completion Criteria

Posts must address all questions and must be no less than 250 words. Student discussion must be relevant to the specific questions/topics being discussed
