States must submit compliance plans. failure will loss federal funds

- dischargers MUST keep records, maintain monitoring equipment, and keep samples of discharge

8. thermal pollution

heated water or material discharged into waterways that upsets the ecological balance and decreases the oxygen content

9. Ocean protection

- Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act
o Extended environmental protection to the oceans
o Requires a permit for dumping waste and other foreign maters into ocean waters
o Est marine sanctuaries in oceans waters and in the great lake and their connecting waters

10. oil-spills

clean water act authroizes the us government to clean up oil spills etc in ocean waters. they then can collect cleanup costs from responsible parties
