This leaves researchers feeling at a loss when trying to discover when and why these conditions occur. The fact remains, though, that the condition is not unseen in children, so further research should occur to help alleviate the condition from occurring in children at all (Blecker and Gold, 1999).

Although there has been little research done on the topic due to its rareness, it has been determined that this condition is the leading cause of abdominal pain in children. Causes of the condition can include head trauma, sepsis, drug ingestion, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, bacterial infection, and Chrone's Disease. Hospitalized pediatric patients have a higher occurrence of developing this condition, as this study shows, especially those who are critically ill and ventilated (Blecker and Gold, 1999).
