Essay Question: The mission of the National Health Service Corps is to build healthy communities by supporting qualified health care providers dedicated to working in areas of the United States with limited access to care. With this mission, we know that patients often need health care providers to better understand them as a whole person. This is particularly important among underserved populations receiving care. Please describe an experience in which you have contributed to the well-being of an underserved community and the impact/result of your contribution.

Dental Clinic

Stowe Mission offers free quality dental care to those in need in the Columbus area. There are no zip code restrictions. The dental clinic is fully staffed by volunteer dentists, dental assistants and hygienists, and students from The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College dental programs.

My role in that clinic:

*I volunteer as a dental assistant at that clinic where treatment is provided at no cost

*I work with dentist and dental student to serve patients in need and patients from underserved communities. I learned from them valuable insights about the dental profession.

*I assist with equipment sterilization, and instrument preparation for patients.

* I am also the chairside assistant with the volunteer dentist and dental student where I help with extractions, and fillings. I have seen a variety of oral health complication and how dentist treat those patients and approach them.

*I learned how to take x-ray and I take patient’s x-ray regularly.

*I assist with maintaining the cleanliness of the clinic

I provided peer-to-peer support, either by appointment or walk-in, connecting students to college and community resources. I recommended resources, while also helping students navigate and apply these tools, in several areas: Housing and Food Insecurity, Emergency Assistance, Technology Support, Transportation, Mental & Physical Health, Parenting & Familial Care. I also provided time and stress management tips and plans. My goal was to develop a culture of care and trust in which students can comfortably and easily reach out for support. Here, I refined my resource management skills.

That was a paid position at a community college where I helped college student from underserved communities be successful at their endeavors.

When a student used to walk to my office, expressing having financial challenge to have food on their plat regularly, it was very easy for me to connect them with resources that could help them navigate this challenge.  When a student expressed that they are struggling to balance between their school load, their full or part time job, and their family, I would get so happy to share with them strategies that worked with me.

Connecting my peers with financial, housing, and transportation resources, listening to their needs, advising them were all things that I happily did in that position. Somedays I would see the impact of my contribution immediately in their happy tears or relieved eyes other days its my happy tears reading their success emails. I was part of a large team, and our impact extended beyond the end of year statistics of number of students served and in which category even if the numbers speak loud as well.
