Pair up with a partner to do the following exercise. You and your partner must independently observe whether or not students are talking during one class. You will make 12 observations. Each observation period should be about 10 seconds. After each observation period, mark yes if a student was observed talking during class; mark no if a student was not. Create a data sheet with two columns (yes, no) and 12 rows (one for each observation period) and record your observations. Using these data, compute Cohen’s kappa to determine the interrater reliability of the observations made.
