Weight: 40% Required preparation Choose a contemporary event to analyse as a case study. A date cut-off of 1 January 2022 applies. Choose a power theory you have not completed an assessment for yet i.e you cannot choose the three faces of power debates from assignment one or the power theory you examined for assignment two (from weeks 4-12) Complete the required readings for the relevant week for your power theory. Undertake further research into your theory and case study. Requirements for the essay itself The purpose of this long essay is to apply a theoretical approach to power to analyse a set of contemporary events. To do this, you will need to build up evidence about a set of events (and/or non-events) involving political power somewhere in the world. Apply one of the concepts, theories or approaches to power examined in the unit to analyse your set of contemporary political events, but make sure to choose one you have not yet employed in an assessment i.e you cannot choose the three faces of power debates from assignment one or the power theory you examined for assignment two. To ensure that you have chosen a different theory, you are required to attach your written commentary from assignment two to your submission. This will not count towards your final word count for the Power application. Develop a specific topic and research question that involves a particular power theory/approach and a clearly defined set of events. Skim ahead in the GOVT3993 Required Readings to get a sense of the available theories and approaches to power. This essay should reflect research into the concept of power that goes beyond the syllabus. Please note that in GOVT3993, we will not be able to look over individual draft assignments but we will be very happy to help you develop your Power Application topic and question. Time will be set aside in classes for this. N.B. a contemporary event can be defined as one that has not yet had time to be thoroughly analysed and explained by the slow wheels of the academy. A cut-off of 1 January 2022 applies, so don't give us an analysis of 9/11, for instance. Of course, contemporary events have deeper, historical roots, so it may be appropriate to research and incorporate that into your analysis. However, the essay should be substantively on contemporary events post January 1 2022. Assessment criteria Breadth and appropriateness of theoretical, empirical, primary and secondary research. Appropriate selection of a case study. Relevant factors here will be: the originality of the selected case study and the relevance of its scope to a 1800-2000 word paper. Appropriate scoping of the topic and inclusion of a clear research question that will be answered in the essay. Demonstrated knowledge, comprehension and appropriate application of power theory perspectives to the chosen case study. Skillful employment of research to mount argument and analysis. Quality of essay structure. Quality of expression. Quality of referencing.
