air to lung cells --> lung cells to capillaries into pulmonary blood -> across capillaries into interstitial fluid --? from interstitial fluid across the plasma membrane and into cells

the biochemical enzymatic reactions that use oxygen to extract energy from cellular nutrients (the aerobic catabolism of to glucose -> ATP)

3. Where are the pulmonary capillaries?

the are very short capillaries that are intermeshed with the alveoli to create a moving sheet of blood where gas exchange can take place (50-100 square meters)

4. What is the airway? What happens to the air?

the passage way from the outside into the lungs all the way down to the alveoli where gas exchange with the pulmonary blood begins (air is warmed, humidified and cleared of harmful substances)

5. What is dead space?

Lung tissue where no gas exchange occurs (anywhere but the alveoli)

6. How do disease effect the dead space?

some disease mearly effect the airway, some diseases degrade the respiratory gas exchange surface and increase dead space

7. What is the flow from terminal bronchiole to alveoli? What is true of this pathway in reference to dead space?

terminal bronchiole --> repiratory bronchiole --> alveolar duct to atrium -> alveolar sacs (only place for gas exchange)

Ciliated columnar epithelial cells interdespersed with goblet cells

9. What is the function of a goblet cell?

produce gelatinous mucus (gel layer), mucopolysaccharides and proteins
