Sophie works at an upscale coffee shop that is part of a nationwide chain of 300 such stores. She started as a barista but after working there for three years, she's been promoted. Her title is now Store Manager. As the Store Manager, Sophie is expected to work from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, with a half-hour lunch break, seven days a week. Management feels that it is important for the store manager to be present at the store to get to know the customers and to make sure everything runs smoothly in order to provide a great customer experience, which translates into growth in store sales volume and store pro?t. Sophie really enjoys working at the coffee shop—coworkers and customers are both very nice. However, since her promotion to Store Manager, she has been feeling a little bumped out. When she was a barista, she received overtime pay for hours she worked over the prescribed weekly hours. But now, as the Store Manager, although she regularly puts in almost 55 hours per week, she's not eligible for overtime pay. In addition, she also feels that the work she's doing doesn't seem much like "management"—she's still making coffee, checking supplies, and sometime cleaning the bathroom. She does, sometimes, need to train other employees and interviewjob applicants. However, Joe, the district manager, is around a lot and he seems to have his own ideas on who to hire most of the time and how to run the store. There are also corporate guidelines that have to be followed on how to manage different aspects of the store. Sophie is beginning to wonder if she was being promotedjust so that the coffee chain can save on overtime costs...
