Use the case below to explore the variety of communication issues involved in effective communication. Prepare a written analysis based on the questions that follow. You can add your own experiences to individualize the analysis.

 

 

CASE

 

Marcos and Alessandra have been dating for over a year. They love each other and are considering marriage, but each person has at least one big reservation about the other.

 

Marcos thinks Alessandra is moody; it seems one minute she is “up” and happy with everyone, including him, and the next she criticizes everything about him. Alessandra finds Marcos difficult because he seems to keep everything inside; she wants him to tell her in detail when he feels good and bad, but he says nothing or responds with only a few words.

 

 

What do you think is the appropriate level of emotional expression between committed partners? Do you think either Marcos or Alessandra should change the way he or she expresses emotion? Describe all of the Influences on Emotional Expression and indicate which influences are affecting Marcos and Alessandra.
