Purpose This assignment is intended to help you assess your ability to analyze a new external environment for perceptions and emotions. Overview For this assignment, you have two choices: Join an online community or participate in an online discussion, chat group, or live event where you are in the minority. OR Attend an event that you would not normally attend where you will be in the minority in some way. This could include attending a religious service of a different faith, a concert with unfamiliar music, a trip to a grocery store that specializes in cuisine not from your country, a restaurant that serves food that you would not likely visit outside of this class, volunteering at a homeless shelter, etc. Action Items Write a 3- to 4-page paper in APA format reflecting on this experience. Include an introduction and a conclusion. Explain why you selected the venue/event/group. Describe the people that you encountered and summarize what happened during the experience. Analyze the situation and your perceptions by responding to the following: How were you different from the majority? Did you have any pre-existing assumptions, biases, or stereotypes before engaging in this activity? How do you think these may have influenced your initial perceptions? Did your perceptions change? Analyze your experience in terms of the stages of perception described in the text. Did you feel you were treated differently than the others in attendance? If so, do you think this assessment is accurate? Perhaps it is, but also consider what perceptual limits may have been influencing your experience. Could it have been a combination of both? Use terminology from the textbook as you discuss and explain your experiences and thoughts. Include citations from the text.
