You may develop an argument about one or more of the novels examined in the latter half of this course: Fledgling, Moon of the Crusted Snow, or The Ballad of Black Tom (in dialogue with “The Horror at Red Hook” or otherwise). Unlike prior assignments, however, it must involve original research into scholarly/secondary sources. You are required to cite and draw upon at least two valid, published academic sources. It is important that you not simply cite these in a perfunctory fashion, but acknowledge their arguments and let them help you make your own. For example, if you are writing about Fledgling, you may want to look at sources specifically about Butler’s book, like Susana M. Morris’s “Black Girls Are from the Future: Afrofuturist Feminism in Octavia E. Butler’s Fledgling,” published in Women’s Studies Quarterly, or “‘Let Me Bite You Again’: Vampiric Agency in Octavia Butler’s Fledgling,” published in GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies. Or you may want to seek out sources about African American women’s writing, or genetic engineering, or vampires. Valid academic sources include: books, journal articles and other publications written by an expert on the topic and generally with a peer review process. These are generally published by either university presses (these have “University” in the name) or other peer-reviewed scholarly presses (e.g. Routledge and Palgrave Macmillan), and generally contain footnotes/endnotes. Textbooks (i.e. Bordwell and Thompson’s Film History) are a somewhat ‘weak’ scholarly source here; they have reliable information, but it is not very in-depth. Video essays are sometimes a valid source, provided that they are made by accredited scholars (it doesn’t hurt to check).
