The paper can cover any topic: from electric vehicles (e.g., Tesla) to mental health (e.g., mindfulness) to the carbon economy (e.g., wind power) to farming (e.g., soil erosion) to economic inequality (e.g., sweatshops) to food waste (e.g., dumpster diving) to architecture (green renovations) to philosophy (e.g., meaning of money, work) to fast fashion (problems and how to overcome them), and so on.

Papers should be related to the course in two ways. First, the paper should have an Alternative Management orientation, that is, an orientation that puts people and planet ahead of maximizing profit (e.g., as is evident in Social and Ecological Thought, or big “S” Sustainability). In any case, someone reading the paper should walk away with a better understanding of the mutual relevance of the Alternative Management orientation and the topic. In other words, readers should acquire a better understanding of the topic in light of an orientation that puts people and planet ahead of profit, and also acquire a better understanding Alternative Management in light of the topic. Note that although the paper needs to have an Alternative Management orientation, this need not be a constant explicit theme discussed throughout the paper (i.e., just like in the course readings, the orientation can simply “be there” without constantly mentioning it).

Second, the readings have three characteristics that should be evident in the paper. First, the paper should provide sufficient content/information for the reader to be able to begin to engage in a knowledgeable conversation on a topic. For most papers this will mean providing key facts or empirical data related to a topic (not simply providing an opinion). Second, the paper should be grounded in relevant scholarly literature and/or other credible sources (e.g., to get started, you may want to do a search on Google Scholar with your topic and the term “sustainability”). These sources should be properly referenced (e.g., using same style as in course Readings) and placed in footnotes so that the reader can easily find out more about a topic if they wish (e.g., provide a link where relevant). For the purposes of this assignment, depending on the nature of the paper, it is expected that most papers will have at least ten different credible sources properly cited. Third, the paper should have from three to five Questions for Reflection and Discussion. These should be thoughtful and thought-provoking questions that encourage readers to pause and reflect on the implications of the information/arguments in the paper. They should not simply ask for readers to repeat facts, but rather should ask readers to think about implications of facts for themselves or business.

On the very top line on the first page of their Term paper students should provide the total number of words in their paper (note that total word count does include the footnotes/references). Note that marks may be reduced if they go beyond 3,000 words, or fewer than 2,500 words (note that the word count includes citations/references).
