Canada's history has been marked by numerous human rights violations. One appalling example is the century-long effort to assimilate Aboriginal children through the residential school system. In other disturbing programs in Alberta and British Columbia, many people considered developmentally disabled were forcibly sterilized so that they could not have children. The Canadian government must take responsibility for acknowledging and atoning for these and other injustices to ensure that they never happen again.
