A research team is studying and designing microbes meant for petroleum-linked bioremediation--microbes tailored to break down complex hydrocarbons, to assist in cleaning up oil spills and other similar environmental contamination

Biology

A research team is studying and designing microbes meant for petroleum-linked bioremediation--microbes tailored to break down complex hydrocarbons, to assist in cleaning up oil spills and other similar environmental contamination. The microbes would have digestive enzymes capable of rendering down the petroleum products into carbon dioxide and water, while converting most of the sulfur contaminants into protein components.

During their research, they accidentally engineered an entire taxon of microbes capable of the opposite--the anabolic synthesis and excretion of long-chain hydrocarbons suitable for conversion into gasoline and other fuels. A preliminary examination of the microbes revealed that they appear to be photoautotrophic, and their products do not contain any of the impurities regularly associated with fossil fuels.

For this assignment, I want you all to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of these microbes, including a discussion of the consequences if such organisms escape the laboratory setting. Are these organisms an environmental godsend, the coming of the Apocalypse, something in between, or something else entirely?

I would like everyone to post their initial opinions on the question, then discuss among yourselves to resolve any differences in opinion. A final summation would be appreciated
