INTERVIEW ASSIGNMENT

You are to  interview with an older adult (60 and over) who has experienced a significant death. The loss may either be recent or in the past. The interview can be over the phone or on an internet platform such as Zoom. Ensure safety protocol, if it is a face to face meeting. The interview is to be typed out exactly the way it occurred. Include all your questions and comments and the person's responses including body language.

 

 The person you interview may be someone you know such as a family member or friend. You are to use good communication techniques and demonstrate respect for the person at all times. Please complete the interview in a way that meets the Person's needs. After the interview is finished, students are to complete a written summary of their interview including responses to guide questions.(15%) You are to write a summary of your impressions and reactions about conducting this interview.(5%) Use the information you have learned in this course to explain your understanding of this person's loss. This would include use of theory, grief reactions, grief along the lifespan, and cultural/spiritual aspects.(10%)

Assignment requires student do demonstrate ability to organize responses in a coherent manner, by using questions provided as a guide. This guide should not limit you from asking other questions. In fact, the questions are a framework to build further questions upon. Students need to prepare and conduct an interview based upon good communication skills. This assignment requires the student to reflect upon the information given and also to utilize the material from class/text to explain your understanding of this person's loss.

Marking Scheme

Interview: 15% All questions are asked during the interview, other questions are asked as appropriate, the interview has a good flow one question leading to another, the interviewer demonstrates good communication and a good empathetic responses. The student demonstrates sensitivity to the Person's feelings and needs. The student demonstrates good understanding of the foundations of grief and grief reactions.  Interview: Student's completed interview demonstrates good composition, ability to organize thoughts and correct spelling and grammar. 

 

Reflection: (5%) Write a summary of your impressions and responses to conducting this interview.  Your mark will be based upon your in depth understanding into insights gained through this interview and for self awareness in general. Also, reflections on how this loss and this interview impacted the person are important to note. 

Understanding the Person's Loss: (10%) Connect the interview and your understanding of the Person interviewed with the information obtained from class/text. This requires in depth understanding of how to use learned material to better understand the Person and the impact of his/her loss.

Guideline Questions: (other questions to be included as appropriate during the interview but these questions must be asked. Use your own words to fit with the interview.)

  1. Please tell me about a significant loss you have experienced? (a)Who died? (b)How old were you at the time? (c)How did they die? (d) Could you tell me about your relationship with them?
  2.   Could you please tell me how you reacted to this loss? (i.e. how did it affect you physically, cognitively, socially and spiritually?) How does it impact you today? (ask questions naturally as you would during a discussion... do not ask all the questions at one time...give the person opportunity to respond)
  3. How did people around you respond to you during the time of this death? (b) Explain if their responses were helpful or not and how. (c) How was this death handled within your immediate family? (d) How was it handled by your network of friends? 
  4. How did your cultural and spiritual background influence your experience of loss?
  5. How has this significant loss impacted your responses to other losses?
  6. How did telling me your story of loss impact you today?
  7.  Is there anything else you want to say?
