CMSC471 Assignment 2: Exploratory Data Analysis

In this assignment, you will perform exploratory analysis on a dataset. Use Tableau and transform the dataset to make it usable.

Dataset: We will use a dataset that contains information about various metrics reported at the global level between 2010 and 2020 in the following categories: global health, energy, quality of life, education & development, sustainability & climate, and economics.

Task: Perform EDA on the dataset and prepare a report highlighting the major patterns and trends with the title "What happened in the last decade?" You do not have to include all the metrics in your analysis, pick your focus and perform a coherent analysis.

What to turn in: A PDF document consisting of the following

•             Report if there are any data quality issues. List the types of quality issues and provide an example for each.

•             Generate and write down 3-5 sub-tasks for the task assigned to the dataset. Think about all the different questions (sub-tasks) that a person might want to ask in order to accomplish the task. These questions should be roughly at the same level as the “sub-task” abstraction in the four-level framework we discussed in class (e.g., slides 19-24 of the "Tasks" lecture slides).

•             For each of the sub-tasks:

•             describe the data transformation you performed in order to answer the question.

o             list the actions you performed to answer the question. The actions should be roughly at the same level as the “action” abstraction in the four-level framework. Include the parameters for each action, for example, “filter” is not enough, you need to specify what field and values are used to filter. Do not walk through each action in gory detail. You don't need to tell us how Tableau works -- we already know that. Describe your actions succinctly.

o             report your findings in the form of specific insights and screenshots. An insight is a unit of information or knowledge that could be an observation of a fact, pattern, or relationship in the data. For example, “Norway has a high number of Olympic medals despite its relatively small population”. Accompany each insight with a screenshot.
