Spring 2021 Online Final Reflection Essay (15% of grade) Due May 13, 2021 by 11:59pm Using lecture material, readings, and class content, write a 1-page single-spaced 12-font Times New Roman, 1-inch margin response. (This is the minimum length, you may exceed this limit if you wish.) This is a new assignment to have us reflect on all that we have learned throughout this semester. I know this is difficult considering all that we have been through but think of all that we have gained in understanding. Think of the potential ideologies we’ve analyzed this semester-American patriotism, military service, the idea of technological progress and/or racial progress, white womenhood and its role in nation-making, the making of race (and racism) race science, eugenics, propaganda, the citizen consumer, and ideas of Americanness. Think of the various concepts pertaining to historical writing or the writing of history: the great man myth, Eurocentrism (or the idea that the West “does” technology), dominant histories, counterhistories, alternative public spheres. Think of the specific media that we’ve covered: the printing press, the telegraph, photography, cinema, radio, and television. We really have covered so much in this class. In person, I would have loved to give you all a round of applause. But over this written assignment, I’d like you to reflect on one important concept/idea/thought gleamed from this class and how it relates to your contemporary moment, your perspective, or your life While this is a personal reflection assignment, please make sure to explain the concepts/ideas before drawing comparisons. Examples could be: thinking about how TikTok is indebted to the cinema of attractions, to the way very way that identity operates! It really is that open-ended. Some sample questions that you could use to orient your response include: How has the class changed the way you think about history? About the writing of history? About importance of different mediums? Race? Gender? Identity? Your own art? If it has not changed it, why is that?
