History 104 Final exam Professor Robert Chase Spring 2021 Submission Requirements: WORD Document, NOT PDF. On the document: Put your NAME on the exam. Choose only 1 of 2 answers. Date Accessible on Blackboard: May 9, 2021 DEADLINE DATE FOR SUBMISSION: May 17, 2021 by 1:00 P.M. After 1:00 P.M., it is late Essay Exam—Pick ONLY one essay question. Parameters: 3-4 pages, typed, double-spaced pages. No citations are necessary. NO MORE THAN 4 pages. Three pages is perfectly acceptable. 1. The Evolution of the Cold War at Home AND Abroad, 1945-1973 President Kennedy once said that: “It is an unfortunate fact that we can secure peace only by preparing for war.” Richard Nixon once said that: “The Cold War isn't thawing; it is burning with a deadly heat. Communism isn't sleeping; it is, as always, plotting, scheming, working, fighting.” Reflecting on these two statements-- explain the nature of the Cold War BOTH abroad AND at home. Your essay must consider how and why the Cold War unfolded from 1945 to 1973, provide particular attention to the individual events, major turning points, and ideological arguments and provide a conclusion as to whether or not the Cold War was inevitable or avoidable. REMEMBER: Consider the politics of the Cold War globally AND at home. This question considers the Cold War at home and abroad through the Vietnam War, which means that is a subject that your answer must address. 2. Chart the development of the African American Freedom Movement from 1945 to 1968 Martin Luther King once said: “We were here before the mighty words of the Declaration of Independence etched across the pages of history. Our forebears labored without wages. They made cotton ‘king.’ And yet out of a bottomless vitality, they continued to thrive and develop. If the cruelties of slavery could not stop us, the opposition we now face will surely fail.... Because the goal of America is freedom, abused and scorned tho' we may be, our destiny is tied up with America's destiny.” Alternatively, Malcolm X offered this assertion: “No, I am not an American. I’m one of the 22 million black people who are the victims of Americanism. One of the 22 million black people who are the victims of democracy, nothing but disguised hypocrisy. So I’m not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or a flag-saluter, or flag waver – no, not I. I’m speaking as a victim of this American system. And I see America through the eyes of the victim. I don’t see any American dream; I see an American nightmare…” Drawing on these two statements, chart the evolution of the African American freedom struggle from 1945 to 1968. In doing so, provide comment and examples that show the events, ideas, strategies and tactics of the civil rights movement that either support or refute Dr. King’s assertion that African Americans’ destiny is tied up with America’s destiny or Malcolm X’s assertion that African Americans are in an “American nightmare” and victims of American democracy. At their core, these two ideas stem from the same root of African American freedom, so an essay answer may consider them as two ideologies drawing from the same well. Your answer must first define each of their philosophies and then spend some time picking a few critical civil rights campaigns or historical turning points from the Second World War to 1968. Do not try to write on every single civil rights campaign that happened, but pick 2-3 to explore alongside their philosophies. CONSIDER BOTH MLK and Malcolm X IN YOUR REFLECTION!
