Silica dust is very small and occurs when materials such as bricks, concrete and pavers are cut or drilled. Artificial stone, commonly used to make kitchen benchtops, is an especially dangerous source of silica dust. People that breathe in silica dust have been known to suffer from major damage to their lungs, ongoing breathing complications and in some cases cancer.
Such is the extent of injury to workers in Australia, it is estimated that the dust could eventually account for 1% of all future lung cancers in the adult population.
