Writing

In responses to your peers, consider their principles and offer your own perspective.

1)To me, the most important part of feedback is specific actionable examples. By pointing out the specific text that needs work, feedback goes from broad and open to interpretation to something the author can actually work on. To elaborate, If someone says that your writing lacks clarity, it would be difficult to fix. What part of the writing causes it to be unclear? But by notating what parts of the text need work, it allows the author to examine their writing. It may even allow them to internalize the lessons going forward because they now have some example of text that would need to be revised.

2)"Honesty without compassion is cruelty and compassion without honesty is manipulation".

Tone is important, being objective is extremely important.  I've always prided myself on my ability to be objective when looking at myself or my children etc...  Regarding tone I think of the old Sienfield episode where Jerry is trying to figure out if he's invited to a party or not.  All he has to go off of is the phrase "Why would Jerry bring anything?"  He doesn't know if "Jerry" is emphasized or "Bring Anything" is emphasized.  Kind of a silly example but it shows the importance of intent and tone.

As a foolish teenager I remember being blunt albeit honest and hurting a lot of feelings.  It's important to have some tact.  Not just to avoid hurting feelings but also to have our counsel received.  If out true intent is to help others then we want the advice we're giving to be received and applied.  Without tact it's likely the person will be hurt and become defensive.
